Fire hydrant inspection
Our mandate is to carry out a systematic fire hydrant inspection in order to determine the capacity of the network, the sectors with the possibility of leaks and the operating condition of this equipment.
A computerized and detailed report of the results of the inspection and analysis of the fire hydrants as well as their isolation valves is given to the customer in electronic format.
Types of Inspection
Annual inspection
Complete inspection carried out only once a year
Semi-annual inspection
Inspection carried out twice a year (spring and fall)
Inspection 3x per year
Spring, fall and winter inspection
Complete fire hydrant inspection by a experienced professional
Identify parts that need repairing
Guarantee the hydrant is functional
General Inspection Method
The technician will complete an individual inspection for each of the fire hydrants including this information.
First Criteria
- The number of the plan and the fire hydrant
- The location of the fire hydrant as well as the sector (e.g. industrial)
- The make and model of the fire hydrant
- Accessibility to the fire hydrant
- Accessibility to the fire hydrant isolation valve nut
- Description and operating condition of the isolation valve
- The number of hose outlets and their diameter
- Condition of hose outlets and plugs
- The thread pitch of the hose sockets
- The height of the flanges from the ground level
- The aesthetic condition of the fire hydrant
- The height of the water table above ground level
- The depth of the fire hydrant, i.e. the distance between the boot and the flanges
Second Criteria
- Description of the operating condition for all the different mechanisms
- Drainage quality
- The tightness of the body and the caps when the fire hydrant is open
- The measurement of static and dynamic pressure in order to calculate the actual flow rate and the flow rate when the dynamic pressure is at 20 psi (138KPa), taking into account the type of elbow installed (ex.: 45o and 90o), taking into account the coefficient out of the outlet
- Recording using an acoustic amplifier of the noises coming from a leak
- Water aesthetics (rusty water, deposits, gravel)
- The date and time of the inspection and the name of the inspector
- The visibility of the isolation valve, its position in relation to the fire hydrant as well as the physical condition of the valve box (once a year).
Description of any interior or exterior damage
- Faulty operating sleeve
- Split crankcase
- Leaky lid
- Bent rod
During the inspection
The technician performs the following operations:
Once a year
When the fire hydrant isolation valve is accessible, the technician manipulates it to ensure that it is open and operational.
Lubrication
Lubrication of hose outlets and plugs
Annual of fall inspection
Emptying fire hydrants that do not drain to prevent freezing
Rinsing
Flushing the fire hydrant and the section of pipe between the fire hydrant and the water main.
